Collection includes correspondence, 1802-1851, of Dr. George Watson (1784-1853) of Richmond, Va., primarily with his wife, Anne (Riddle) Watson (1791-1882), and his brother David Watson (1773-1830) of "Brackett's," Louisa County, Va. Subjects include George Watson's medical education in Europe and practice in Richmond; slaves in Louisa County and Richmond; agriculture; and Virginia politics. Also, includes George Watson's business papers concerning his medical practice, plantation management, and the hiring out of slaves; and correspondence, 1815-1874, of Anne (Riddle) Watson of Richmond with family members and friends. Also, includes correspondence, 1814-1877, and personal papers of Dr. Robert Archer (1794-1877), a surgeon in the U.S. Army serving primarily in Florida (including letters of Zachary Taylor concerning the Indian problems in Florida and Archer's resignation); papers, 1861-1901, of Robert Samuel Archer (1828?-1901), merchant and iron manufacturer in Richmond, Va.; records, 1845-1846, of the Virginia Association of Ladies for Erecting a Statue to Henry Clay; and scattered papers of other members of the Archer, Riddle, and Waston families of Virginia.

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States.
